Timor-Leste introduced the HPV vaccine into its routine immunization schedule with a two-week rollout campaign that was scheduled to begin August 8. The push was set to enlist nearly 1,700 health workers as it targeted 15,000 11-year-old girls. Subsequently, the country plans to deploy 38,370 doses in an HPV catch-up campaign targeting girls ages 12 to 14 over the next six months. WHO; Gavi

 

Sudan conducted the second round of a polio vaccination campaign August 19-22, targeting over 2.9 million kids under 5 with nOPV2. During the door-to-door effort, about 7,500 vaccinators administered two drops of vaccine to children across seven states, beginning in Gedarif, Kassala, Northern state, Red Sea and River Nile, and continuing in Blue Nile and White Nile states. The first round of the campaign, in June, reached approximately 3.3 million under-5 children with nOPV2 and vitamin A supplements. WHO EMRO

 

Pakistan’s Sindh province launched a two-phase polio vaccination campaign on August 15, targeting 1.1 million children in Karachi under age 5. The ten-day exercise sought to administer OPV to the entire target population and deliver fractional IPV doses via needle-free injectors to 1,037,000 children ages 4 months to 5 years in 85 high-risk union councils. Some 4,697 vaccination teams visited homes in high-risk areas and helped guide parents to vaccination centers. Business Recorder; Xinhua

Outbreak Response

Afghanistan kicked off a four-day anti-polio campaign on August 10. The effort targeted 2.4 million children under age 5 with polio vaccine in seven provinces (Balkh, Helmand, Herat, Kandahar, Nimroz, Uruzgan and Zabul). Salam Watandar; Polio Free Afghanistan

 

Lebanon addressed a cholera emergence in neighboring Syria by launching a vaccination campaign on August 19. In its first five days, the push delivered 56,709 vaccine doses in the high-risk governorates of Akkar, Baalbek-Hermel and Bekaa, and the campaign was set to continue while the risk remained. Integrated Campaigns

Guatemala launched an integrated measles and polio vaccination campaign August 3, targeting 1,397,429 children ages 2-5. Provisioning MMR and OPV, the exercise was set to run until October 5. Local Campaigns

India on August 10 launched the second phase of its national biannual MDA campaign to eliminate lymphatic filariasis. Targeting 63 endemic districts in the states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Odisha, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh, the drive provided door-to-door administration of dual- and triple-drug regimens and—in addition to delivering the meds—focused on ensuring their consumption. In Uttar Pradesh alone, the exercise aimed to reach nearly 35 million people across 27 districts, enlisting 61,512 teams comprising 123,024 trained health workers. The national MDA coincided with the second round of National Deworming Day, a school- and health center-based program that seeks to treat all children and adolescents ages 1-19 for soil-transmitted helminths. Mozambique introduced the new R21 malaria vaccine in a campaign beginning August 5. Targeting 300,000 children ages 6 months to 11 years, the effort focused on 22 districts in the Zambézia province. Gavi

 

Sierra Leone’s Ituri province launched a measles vaccination campaign the week of August 4, targeting 66,000 eligible children ages 6 months to 10 years. The campaign focused on 18 health districts within the Mambasa territory’s Mandima health zone, including Bela, Byakato, Makeke, Mandima and Teturi. World Today News

 

The Argentine city of La Rioja started a dengue vaccination drive on August 1. With 10,000 doses available, the exercise targeted adolescents and adults ages 16-20 for a two-dose regimen. Health workers canvassed young people in public settings, seeking to register vaccinees, who could then receive their shots at local health centers.
